Elmo and his Sesame Street friends help teach toddlers and the adults in their lives that everyone is the same on the inside, and it’s our differences that make this wonderful world, which is home to us all, an interesting-and special-place. We all have the same needs, desires, and feelings. Who better than Sesame Street to teach us that we may all look different on the outside-but it’s important to remember that deep down, we are all very much alike.

We’re Different, We’re the Same (a Sesame Street book) by Bobbi Kates Picture Books About Race and Diversity for Kids I have not read them yet myself, but plan to begin collecting them and reading them to my kids. I want them to really believe that we are all beautiful, equal, capable.įollowing are some books that have been recommended as the best books about race and cultural diversity for kids. I have the responsibility to teach my children to educate them and help them make the next generation better. Just like anything, the teaching begins in our homes. When you are not the one experiencing it, you do not realize the extent of it. My eyes have been opened this week as I have learned how much racism still exists in our country. I love the variety of people and the shades of color in this world. I have always believed and taught my children that we are all children of God and as such should all be treated with the same love, respect and kindness. But, since they are not, I try hard to teach them to love all kinds of people. I wish my kids were able to experience the diversity I did. Living in Utah, there is very little diversity here and it something I miss a lot. I had good friends of all nationalities and colors. Growing up in Southern Florida, I was surrounded by people of all races and colors. Hopefully this can help you to do the same. Right now it is central in our country, so I want to be sure I am educating my kids on this topic.

This is such an important topic to teach to our kids. Today I want to share with you a list of books about race and diversity for kids.
